چکیده

We report on a tunable all-optical delay line for pulses with optical frequency within the Rb D 2 absorption line. Pulses of 10 ns duration are delayed in a 10 cm hot vapour cell by up to 40 ns where the transmission reduces to approximately 10%. Using an optical frequency between absorption components from different isotopes allows the delay to be increased or decreased by optical pumping with a second laser, producing rapid tuning over a range more than 40% of the initial delay. We investigate the frequency and intensity ranges in which this delay line can be realised. Our observations are in good agreement with a numerical model of the system.

Broadband optical delay with large dynamic range

The use of atomic media to produce optical delay has predominantly exploited the steep dispersion associated with electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) [1]. While this can lead to very low group velocities it has a severe bandwidth limitation owing to the narrow spectral range over which the transparency and steep dispersion occur, making delays longer than the pulse width difficult to...

The ability to control the speed and polarisation of light pulses will allow for faster data flow in optical networks of the future. Optical delay and switching have been achieved using slow-light techniques in various media, including atomic vapour. Most of these vapour schemes utilise resonant narrowband techniques for optical switching, but suffer the drawback of having a limited frequency r...

Precise measurements of optical cavity dispersion and mirror coating properties via femtosecond combs.

We precisely determine the dispersion of an optical cavity over a large spectral bandwidth using a broadband optical comb generated by a femtosecond laser. This approach permits the effective characterization of the next generation of mirrors that will offer high reflectivity, minimal absorption/scattering loss, and well-defined dispersion characteristics. Such mirrors are essential for constru...
